First hospitality job:
A busser at Paesano's Pizza
Age you started working in hospitality:
13
Your inspiration to begin working in hospitality:
I was having so much fun working in restaurants and it was something that I was good
at, so I changed my career path from teaching to Restaurant Management when I was
in University.
My hospitality mentor
Ralph Biamonte owned a local restaurant where I worked and it was him that
encouraged me to go into the restaurant business. I absolutely credit my career to
him teaching me the ropes as a young manager.
What are your favourite aspects of your job?
I love that my job covers so many areas. Some days are all about food, other days
are focused on Human Resource matters and some days are about hosting a one of
a kind event for a VIP site visit. Every day is different so you never get bored.
What has inspired you to continue your career path in hospitality?
I think the fact that I have been lucky enough to continue to advance my career at
each step that I take has helped me want to stay in this business. There is so many
branches to the Hospitality Industry that make it easy to make a change if you are
looking for a new direction in life.
Advice for students interested in a career in hospitality:
Always look ahead, and work for companies that want you to do the same. If you want
to travel, find the jobs that allow you to do so and work for companies that can
make that happen and if you aren't learning in the job that you are in, you need to
change jobs. Learn as many parts of the business as you can when you are young
and that will help point you in the right direction for the rest of your career.
