First hospitality job:

Growing up in my parents bakery/coffee shop/butcher shop, I learned early the importance of taking exceptional care of Guests. My first hotel role was as a Guest Service Agent at Comfort Inn Parry Sound & a fine dining server.

Age you started working in hospitality:

16

Your inspiration to begin working in hospitality:

A friend also worked at the hotel and loved it as it gave an opportunity to focus on my studies in the downtime at Reception while working with a great team.

My hospitality mentor:

Many, but Karen Dench (Director Revenue with JW Marriott Muskoka) identified my aptitude and supported my growth into the commercial discipline which spring-boarded my career and Colin Jones with Fairmont who helped me to develop & refine my leadership skills.

What are your favourite aspects of your job?

Developing new leaders, taking great care of our Guests & Associates and the feeling of tangible success.

What has inspired you to continue your career path in hospitality?

Starting with JW Marriott Muskoka, I quickly became fascinated by the committed Teamwork, passion and level of professionalism & talent it took to orchestrate, lead & deliver results in these complex businesses - the challenge spoke to me and once I had 'hotels in my blood', there was no looking back!

Advice for students interested in a career in hospitality:

Actively seek out mentors and be open to all types of advice and feedback and develop relationships in other disciplines to learn the basics of each major area of the hotel. Being open to relocating for a great opportunity, especially early in your career, will be key to growth.
